I transformed a residential apartment into a modular ten-camera broadcast studio for podcasts, livestreams, call-in shows, gaming segments and experimental production.

The goal was never simply to create a visually interesting podcast background. I wanted a complete production environment that could support different formats, guests and technical requirements without rebuilding the studio for every episode.

The goal was never simply to create a visually interesting podcast background. I wanted a complete production environment that could support different formats, guests and technical requirements without rebuilding the studio for every episode.

The apartment became both the set and the production infrastructure. The living room served as the primary broadcast area, while the bedroom, closet, bar, arcade cabinet, retractable backdrop and custom furniture became additional production zones. Cameras, lighting, audio, computing and auxiliary media sources were designed to work as one connected system.

The project began with a deceptively simple challenge: create a recurring video and podcast series from a residential apartment without making every episode look or function like a conventional home recording.

The space needed to support multiple guests, live switching, isolated camera angles, computer sources, telephone call-ins, gaming segments, projection, alternate sets and future live-music production. At the same time, it still had to remain a usable apartment.

Rather than treating those constraints as limitations, I used them to shape the system. Furniture became production equipment, walls became sets, ceiling beams became rigging and cable-distribution infrastructure, and different rooms became independent creative environments.

Design

A modular environment with its own visual language

The visual direction combined the intimacy of a home studio with the energy of a small late-night show, arcade, workshop and independent broadcast space. Each area was designed to offer a distinct camera background while remaining connected to the Miscellaneous Important Stuff identity.

The primary set placed two couches around a central production table, allowing me to host the show while also operating its technical systems. A bar, retractable photo backdrop, arcade area, closet, bedroom set and Lite-Brite wall created alternate visual environments without requiring a separate facility.

Framed graphics, guitars, arcade cabinets, books, acoustic foam, custom displays, colored practical lighting and collected objects kept the environment personal rather than commercially generic. The result was playful on camera, but carefully structured behind it.

Ten cameras, multiple sets and one connected workflow

Multi-camera coverage

The studio used two Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6Ks, four Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4Ks, a Canon C100, two GoPros and a webcam. Together they covered individual host and guest shots, the main two-shot, bar, backdrop, closet, bedroom, overhead studio view, tabletop perspective and Galaga player reaction.

Centralized video switching

Camera feeds were routed through the ceiling structure into a Blackmagic ATEM Production Studio 4K. Cameras without native SDI output were converted before reaching the switcher, allowing a mix of cinema cameras, compact cameras and auxiliary sources to operate within one SDI workflow.

Software production and streaming

The switched program and additional computer sources were managed through Wirecast for livestreaming and software-based recording. Episodes could be produced live or refined through additional post-production editing afterward.

Distributed media sources

A second computer in the bedroom functioned as a source inside Wirecast, allowing media or devices located outside the primary production area to become part of the living-room broadcast workflow.

Expandable audio

Shure SM7B microphones were routed through a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20. A second audio interface in the closet provided room for additional inputs and supported plans for full-band or live-music production.

Telephone call-ins

A physical phone line was connected to an audio converter and routed into the Scarlett interface, allowing callers to join the program as a live source alongside the in-studio microphones.

Gaming capture

A webcam mounted to the Galaga cabinet captured the player, while an AV.io HD capture device brought the arcade screen into the production system. This allowed gameplay and player reactions to be incorporated as separate show sources.

Lighting and scenic control

Remotely controlled RGB and color-temperature-adjustable tube fixtures were mounted throughout the ceiling grid. Godox SL-60X lights, softboxes, bi-color panels, RGB shelf lights, Alexa-controlled LED strips and a ceiling-mounted projector allowed each set to take on a distinct visual treatment.

Custom motorized furniture

The custom Pog table contained an actuator that raised it from coffee-table height to approximately three or four feet. It could function as casual furniture, a gaming surface or a raised presentation table depending on the segment.

Acoustic treatment

Three-inch pyramid acoustic foam panels were distributed throughout the studio to reduce reflections and control echo within a residential room filled with hard and irregular surfaces.
